Performance Science traineeships now open

Gain world class experience working with Olympic, Paralympic and World Championships athletes through the VIS Performance Science traineeship.

The VIS Performance Science department is offering exciting opportunities for Exercise and Sport Science students/graduates seeking to explore or further a career in high performance sport.

Operating in partnership with National Sporting Organisations and State Sporting Associations, the VIS delivers high performance daily training environments for sports and athletes in support of the National High Performance Sport Strategy.

Our facility and staff help prepare and support future and current Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth Games and World Champion athletes such as Olympic medallists Jemima Montag and Rhydian Cowley or Paralympic medallists Col Pearse and Jess Gallagher. The traineeships offer a rare opportunity to work alongside these athletes and contribute to the successes in their athlete careers.

Each 2024-25 traineeship is a 12-month volunteer position and trainees will be directly supervised by a VIS Performance Scientist.

The traineeships include fortnightly workshops hosted by staff across all areas of the VIS, designed to facilitate discussion, increase technical knowledge, share current best practices, and provide a unique insight into the VIS as an organisation, giving trainees a holistic experience to athlete support systems.

The traineeship will align with one of the VIS Performance Science disciplines:

1. Movement Science (Biomechanics & Skill Acquisition)

  • Video capture to analyse movement (both qualitative and quantitative) during training and competition

  • Data entry, analysis, and generation of reports for coaches, athletes, and other members of the performance team
  • Assist with various skill-based interventions
  • Involvement in data collection and analysis for VIS research projects

Opportunities within other sports exist on a Projects basis, outside of those listed above. Projects are often transdisciplinary in nature involving an array of expertise, including data science.
