Scanlan and Willett win Gold in Trap Mixed Team

Victorian Institute of Sport’s duo Laetisha Scanlan and James Willett, who respectively won silver and gold in their two individual Trap events, won gold for the third time at the ISSF World Cup Shotgun event in Acapulco, Mexico.

“For the last few months James and I have been training hard together in preparation for the World Cup,” Scanlan explained at the end of the tournament.

“We are thrilled to return home with gold for Australia.”

The duo hit 147 targets out of 150 in the qualification rounds and 46 out of 50 targets in the final to secure their victory.

Fellow VIS athletes Penny Smith and Mitchell Iles-Crevatin placed fourth in the same event with a score of 29/35, and managed to equal the new qualification World Record score with 149 out of 150 targets hit.

Willett won gold in the Men’s Trap Event, without missing a single target shooting a perfect 125 targets equalling the World Record; a feat that has only been achieved 12 times in the history of the sport.

With six athletes battling it out in a shoot-off for the last position in the final and for the medals, Willett was excellent and did not relinquish first position extending his lead for the gold medal in the remaining shots.
