O'Brien close to best

VIS’ Kelland O’Brien is getting back to his best placing second in the men’s Madison event at the UCI Track World Cup in Hong Kong on the weekend.

After taking a lap and the lead halfway through the 120 lap race, O’Brien and team mate Sam Welsford were edged in the final sprint by New Zealanders Tom Sexton and Campbell Stewart.

Fellow Victorian Institute of Sport cyclists Luke Plapp and Godfrey Slattery paired up to win bronze in the team pursuit.

In the men’s team pursuit, the teenage quartet of VIS athletes Luke Plapp and Godfrey Slattery, and team mates Jarrad Drizners (SASI) and Conor Leahy (TIS) won the bronze medal in just their second World Cup event.

“I’m proud to be a part of this team.” Slattery posted via his social media account.

Meanwhile back at home, VIS scholarship holder Ruby Roseman-Gannon placed a solid 13th in the Cadel Evans Towards Zero race in Albert Park.

Jensen Plowright travelled across to New Zealand to compete in the Cycle Classic and finished in 1st during Stage 3 and 2nd in Stage 5.
