Nutrition Tip | Still run down in Spring?

Spring is in the air and winter has hopefully finally passed us by. But are you still finding you’re getting sick and run down?

When we get sick; chicken soup, vitamin C and ginger tea all come to mind as home remedies and quick fixes. But, did you know that as an athlete you might not be fuelling enough and this could be contributing to consistent colds and being run down?

Overall energy is more important than specific micronutrients when it comes to being run down. Ask yourself, are you getting enough carbohydrates, protein and fats to get through training and the buzz of daily life?

When it comes to the research, the AIS looked into athletes in their lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympics and found that when athletes weren’t fuelling enough they were over 7 times more likely to get sick than those who were getting enough fuel.

So next time you get sick, grab the tissue box and your ginger tea, but consider how well you’re fuelling and re-fuelling around training to meet your goals.
