Nutrition Tip | One Broccolatte, please

Don’t know if you’ve heard, but broccoli coffee, or ‘broccolatte’ is the latest nutrition trend to hit the market. But do the nutrition benefits add up?

The broccoli powder used to make broccolattes is prepared by dehydration processes and equates to about a serve of broccoli in every 2 tablespoons of powder. Whilst this might provide a small additional amount of phytochemicals, fibre, protein and micronutrients to your hot milk, the toss-up will come from the cost as it starts to hit the selves.   Like previous trends, the cost of the broccoli powder will be expected to be far greater than an actual serve of broccoli.

What this trend really highlights is the fact that 96% of Australian adults don’t get enough vegetables in their diet. We should be aiming for at least 5 serves of veg every day.   This novel approach to veg could add some more nutrients, but should really bring attention to how we could introduce more vegetables into the meals we create consistently without relying on an expensive new trend.
