Flavoured milk or Supplement?
You may have noticed the increase in flavoured milk drinks on the market recently, many promoting the fact that they are a good source of protein. Are these simply milk, or are they in fact, a supplement?
Just because they are sold in the supermarket, as opposed to a supplement store, does not necessarily make them a food. The best way to check is to look at the ingredient list. If it lists a protein, protein blend, caseinate or whey protein isolate or concentrate or similar, then it’s a supplement. Therefore the usual due diligence to check safety must be done. Crosscheck through the ASADA Clean Sport app to ensure that it has been third party batch tested. Or check with your Sports Dietitian if unsure. If the ingredients are simply milk or milk powders, then consider the product a food and drink freely.
