Table Tennis Review: Commonwealth Games

Summary…

VIS table tennis players Melissa Tapper and Jian Fang Lay enjoyed a hectic Commonwealth Games schedule competing in a range of table tennis events.

The ever-popular Tapper won gold in the TT6-10 singles and didn’t finish outside the top ten in any other of her events.

Her gold medal was one of the highlights, becoming the first Australian to achieve Commonwealth Games success in table tennis.

Close to tears after her victory, Tapper said that her success is the culmination of a long journey.

“I didn’t even know until a few days ago that I was out for our first Commonwealth Games gold…. I felt like I really deserved this one.” She said.

“It’s taken a lot to get me here. Especially through the Paralympics. Paralympic sport has opened up a whole new world for me. It’s given me so much courage and belief in myself and I’m just so happy I’ve been able to step up.”

Jian Fang Lay also had a successful campaign getting very close to the podium across her four events. Including an impressive fifth in the women’s singles.
