Nutrition Tip | Tips to eating in the Athletes Village

Before our athletes arrived at the Commonwealth Games village, VIS Nutrition spent some time educating them on how to continue their usual eating habits in the grand environment that is the Dining Hall, as well as other food and venue stations in the heart of the village.   

Imagine a kid in a candy shop, a free candy shop with interesting, aesthetically pleasing or simply delicious foods that may not have been tried or tasted before ~ milk bars, treat stations, smoothie and ice-cream stands and barista/drinks stations are all part of this year’s Gold Coast Games!  

Prior to competition, athletes are advised to continue their usual dietary intake that has formed the foundations of their training and competition diets and led them to team selection! Why change things that are working?! After competition, athletes can relax and enjoy different foods that may have been limited during preparation. 

Our golden tips to eating in the village and surrounds:

1.      Eat as you would at home

2.      Don’t let other athletes or your competitor’s choices, deter usual food and or quantities that know work for you

3.      Read the nutrition information panel and don’t be afraid to ask for additional serves if you need

4.      If you’re an athlete that does enjoy the occasional treat, don’t exclude it because you feel as though you need to be super healthy – happy athletes are good performers!

5.      Plan ahead, understand where you can access food and fluids if offsite and don’t be afraid to top up room fridges with suitable snacks
