Nutrition Tip | Athletes Fueling Strategy

What an exceptional effort by all VIS athletes and their support staff at the Commonwealth Games!

As the nutrition team reflect on these performances, it is also a time to appreciate our athletes fueling strategies for their competition.

Our marathon runner Lisa Weightman carbohydrate loaded to ensure optimal glycogen storage as well as taking on additional carbs, fluids and electrolytes in the hot and humid conditions; our gymnasts and divers enjoyed light meals pre-tumbling to prevent gut upset; our shooters fueled with low GI, sustained carbohydrates to assist concentration and blood glucose stability; our throwers found good sources of lean protein to maintain their strength and power; our superstar Table Tennis athlete Milly Tapper planned her meal schedule around her games in advance but needed some extra snacks at Oxenford studios when her gold medal table tennis match was delayed by over an hour.and our talented Long Jumper Brooke Stratton, made smart Gluten free choices in the dining hall to minimise any gut upsets to manage her coeliac disease and keep well fueled!
