Golden Mack lights up the pool

VIS swimmer Mack Horton took back the 400-metre freestyle title at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday night, with the last Australian gold medallist being the great Ian Thorpe at Manchester 2002.

Horton’s swim was faultless, reeling in teammate Jack McLoughlin and England’s James Guy to win gold.

Horton left it late but was never in doubt making his move on the fifth lap after Guy tried to take the race, taking the lead with 200m left to swim, to win gold in 3min 43.76sec.

Horton said that the atmosphere and crowd support was incredible and unforgettable.

“I had goose bumps when I walked out on to the pool deck – it’s an amazing feeling and with almost my entire family here that makes it even more special,” said Horton.

Horton’s win brings the title home, in an event that was dominated by Australia between 1986 with Duncan Armstrong and 2002 with Ian Thorpe.

Those who thought Horton was done there – were kidding themselves.

Horton stormed home from lane one in the men’s 200m freestyle to claim silver, to teammate Kyle Chalmers.

Mack topped off his incredible form last night picking up his second gold medal in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team, fittingly anchoring the team home to declare Australia’s dominance.

Horton will now turn his attention to the 1500m freestyle, which kicks off tomorrow night at 9PM.
