Beach Volleyball Review: Commonwealth Games

Summary…

Victorian Institute of Sport’s Damien Schumann and his Australian teammate Chris McHugh became our first ever Commonwealth Games beach volleyball gold medalists.

In a match which had people around Australia glued to their TV sets and an audience so excited they would have lifted the roof off a stadium the Aussies fought back from 12-9 down in the deciding set to win it 18-16.

Schumann said that the pressure he and McHugh were feeling was “extreme”.

“It’s hard to describe those sorts of pressure-filled moments,” Schumann said.

“You can just feel you heart pumping and the adrenaline coursing. You’re not sore, you’re not fatigued, you’re not tired. Your eyes go a little bit wider and you’re just ready for anything.

“There’s no steadiness when it gets to that place in the game.”

The number…

1… Throughout the whole competition the Australian men only dropped one set, which was against Canada in the gold medal match.
