Sports nutrition and your dental health!
As athletes, we are constantly manipulating carbohydrate content to allow for the best outcomes in our sports. But what effect does consuming high sugary foods have on our dental health?
Studies show that the surface of our teeth is susceptible to acidity which can result in dental decay, erosion or both. Decay can be caused by frequency of intake, duration of teeth exposure and overall sugary content of the food.
So what can we do?
- Make drinks with correct H20 volumes to reduce sugary concentration
- Don’t swish sports drink around in your mouth, just swallow
- Rinse your mouth guard regularly
- Use a combo of sports drink and water
- Try not to consume sugary food/drinks before bed
- Don’t immediately brush your teeth, wait at least 30 minutes to allow the tooth surface to reharden
