Dual Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Chris Ciriello, yesterday announced his retirement from the sport following nine years representing Australia on the international stage.
Ciriello first made his debut for Australia in 2008 and has since racked up over 170 caps for the Kookaburras.
Known for his effective drag-flick on penalty corners, Ciriello has long been a key in the Kookaburras success. Most notably, in the 2015 World League semi final against the Netherlands, Ciriello effectively sealed Australia the gold medal, netting the only goal of the match moments before the final buzzer.
Over his career, Cirello has won one Olympic bronze medal, two Commonwealth Games gold medals, two Championship trophies and one World Cup.
Most recently, he captained the Victorian Vikings to back-to-back titles at the Australian Hockey League title, in an effort he said he couldn’t be prouder of.
