Mitchell clocks fastest time on home soil

Canberra was host to the Athletics Australia SUMMERofATHS Grand Prix for a two-day program, featuring Australia’s best.

VIS athlete Morgan Mitchell achieved her second IAAF World Championship qualifier, further enhancing her chances of selection for London come April at the Australian Championships.

"My coach told me to get the qualifier locked away early," said Mitchell, who pulled away from the fast-starting Olivia Tauro on the final bend.

Mitchell extended her undefeated 400m winning streak in Australia to 17 as she took a commanding win in a time of 51.66, her third fastest time ever.

Already qualified for London, Damien Birkinhead continued his strong season with a 20.36m throw to win the men’s shot put.

VIS scholarship holder Linden Hall claimed victory in the women’s 1500m in a time of 4:12.33, in what was a tight finish against Jenny Blundell (NSW).

“It was so windy on the back straight. I can’t be disappointed with the time. I felt Jenny there and was happy I got the win over her,” Hall said.

Rio Paralympian Nicholas Hum (T20) launched himself an enormous 7.41m (+2.7) in the long jump, closing in on the world record of 7.60m.

Isis Holt (T35) was fourth across the line in the 200m Ambulant in a time of 29.54.

Peter Bol was victim to the cruel rule of disqualification for false starting in the men’s 800m.
