UniSA stuns rich and fancied rivals

An amateur national wildcard team thrown together on the eve of the Tour Down Under has upstaged professional squads with $20 million budgets to be ranked No.1 in the world.

VIS cyclist Lucas Hamilton was among the seven-man Team UniSA-Australia group that produced victory in the team’s classification for the first World Tour race of the season.

UniSA-Australia director Brad McGee believed it was possible for the team to take it out after strong performances at Stage 1 and 2.

“Priority was servicing our GC contenders in Nathan Earle and Michael Storer and always keeping Lucas Hamilton and Jai Hindley in the pocket because they showed good climbing abilities,” McGee said.

“And we acknowledged if that was achieved, then teams classification was very much a possibility as well. It’s just a great bonus for the week and that was the approach all along.

The seven- team of Cameron Meyer, Nathan Earle, Callum Scotson, Jai Hindley, Lucas Hamilton, Sam Jenner and Michael Storer won the classification by 1min 19secs.
