Gerrans gets silver, Hamilton bags bronze

VIS cyclist Simon Gerrans finished second in the elite men’s road race, while Lucas Hamilton picked up a silver and bronze in the U23 criterium and road race respectively at the 2017 Cycling Australia Road National Championships in Buninyong over the weekend.

The 183.6km, 18-lap race elite men’s road race played out in scorching conditions on the hilly, 10.2km circuit up and around Mt. Buninyong on Sunday. Miles Scotson (SASI) launched an audacious solo attack from behind in the final stages of an epic Australian road racing championship to claim the title at Ballarat. Two-time former winner and pre-race favourite Simon Gerrans, riding for Orica-Scott, won the bunch kick for second in a thrilling finish, while fellow favourite Nathan Haas (Dimension Data) dashed to third.

Sam Jenner (NSWIS) emerged victorious from the U23 men’s road race, riding to an impressive solo victory in hot conditions, Alex Porter (SASI) was second in the small-bunch sprint, while last year’s runner-up in the road race, VIS athlete Lucas Hamilton, was third. Hamilton also took the silver medal in a thrilling finish in the under 23 men's criterium in Ballarat. Newly crowned Oceania scratch race champion Alex Porter (SASI) snared the title ahead of Hamilton, with Ayden Toovey (NSWIS) rounding out the podium.
