Vipers snare silver

The Victorian Vipers fell short in their bid to claim the gold medal at the women's Australian Hockey League in Perth, narrowly losing 3-2 to the Queensland Scorchers in the grand final.

The Vipers led 1-0 at half time through a penalty corner conversion from Hannah Gravenell, but the reigning champions returned fire in the second quarter courtesy of Savannah Fitzpatrick, taking the score to 1-1.

Rebecca Greiner capitalised from a Victorian penalty corner mis-trap to give the Scorchers a 2-1 lead at three quarter time.

In the final quarter, Jodie Kenny used her trademark drag flick to convert a penalty corner for Queensland right at the beginning of the 60th minute of play, only for VIS athlete Sophie Taylor to charge down to the opposite end of the pitch and score for Victoria.

With only minutes on the clock, the Vic girls couldn’t find the elusive equaliser to take the game to a shootout, and had to settle for silver.

Congratulations to VIS athlete Georgia Nanscawen for winning the prestigious Player of the Tournament award.
