O'Brien eyes international success

VIS athletes Kell O’Brien and Alex Morgan both finished in the top three in the Victorian Omnium Championships, held at the Darebin International Sports Centre.

O’Brien accumulated 119 points throughout the four events on the day to win the title ahead of the more experienced duo of Matthew Ross and Morgan.

18-year-old O’Brien won the first and last events of the day – the scratch race and the points race – to help cement his victory.

Ross finished second in each of those events and although he won the elimination race, he finished with a total of 106 points, which wasn’t enough to overtake O’Brien.

Morgan won the second event of the day – the tempo ronde event – but finished the day with 92 points.

O’Brien and Ross are also set to ride alongside each other this week in the Australasian 6 Day Race at the DISC Velodrome in Melbourne.

Formerly a BMX rider, O’Brien only took up track cycling three years ago but he has already competed all over the world.

The teenager now has his sights set on representing Australia at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

He has also committed to a series of camps with the national team in Adelaide but will remain a full VIS scholarship holder.
