Nutrition Tip | Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Should I have it in my pantry?

Healthy fats are essential to an athlete’s diet as they boost energy intake and assist with countering the inflammatory effects of hard training.

Aside from its fat profile, it is well established that Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has a multitude of health benefits for both athletes and the general population. These include:

-          Provides a healthy source of energy for athletes requiring a higher calorie/kilojoule intake

-          Reduces symptoms of chronic inflammation from hard training and rheumatoid arthritis

-          Assists in improving the absorption of antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins from foods

-          Contains a high proportion of monounsaturated fats which assists in reducing risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity

EVOO is the highest grade of olive oil extracted from the fruit of the olive tree without heat or chemicals. Unlike other oils that undergo an industrial refining process, this extraction process means that EVOO contains no trans fats (unhealthy fats).

EVOO is safe, stable and desirable to cook with as it contains high levels of naturally occurring antioxidants. These antioxidants protect the oil from breaking down when heated.

So, what are you waiting for? Have it as a staple in your pantry and not only will you enjoy its beautiful flavour but all of its health properties too!!
