Nutrition Tip | DEXA Scans

Have you been keeping up with the VIS "Team Behind the Athlete" video series? Episode 1 featured our Nutrition Department with one of our Sports Dietitians, Elaine Bo, speaking about DEXA scans.

DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is an advanced body composition tool that can measure body fat, bone density and muscle. It is the most accurate and reliable method of body composition assessment, which can be used to monitor adaptation to training, particularly if you are trying to increase muscle mass and/or reduce body fat.

DEXA can also monitor body composition changes throughout a rehabilitation program, as it is common for muscle mass to be lost during periods of injury.

Aside from this, DEXA also has the ability to identify your risk of osteoporosis by providing information about your bone density.

For more information about DEXA scans, speak to your Sports Dietitian and they will advise you of whether or not you will need one as this is dependent on your goals and training.
