Hamilton awarded white jersey

Lucas Hamilton was awarded the best young rider, while Simon Gerrans finished runner up in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race on Sunday.

VIS scholarship holder Simon Gerrans finished runner up in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race on Sunday.

Gerrans was pipped at the line by German sprinter Nikias Arndt, with WAIS athlete Cameron Meyer rounding out the podium in third place.

Meyer’s bold attack from inside the closing kilometre of the race nearly snared the KordaMentha Australian National Team victory. The young squad, which included VIS athlete Lucas Hamilton, finished with four riders in the leading group of 23, earning them victory in the team classification.

Hamilton was also awarded the white jersey for best young rider in the first one-day World Tour race of the season.

In other cycling news, VIS para-cyclists Alistair Donohoe and Jessica Gallagher have been named in the Australian team for the 2017 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships to be held in Los Angeles in March.
