The formation of a leadership group within a team is a step towards team leadership effectiveness as well as personal development for team members.

The purpose of a leadership group is to lift the team when things get tough, to lead by example and to provide counsel to team members when they falter.

Specifically, when on the field the leadership group will:

  • Lead by example to support team members
  • Build a sense of commitment for all team members to demonstrate leadership

Whilst off the field:

  • Take some responsibility for game preparation
  • Involve team members in specific tasks within the change room
  • Set a fine example with activities that are socially responsible
  • Provide guidance to team members when personal issues arise

Leadership is an extension of character - confident, experienced and committed. Players who take on a role within a leadership group must have the respect of their team members and display self-initiative in the tasks assigned to them.
