Victorian Institute of Sport Advancement Series

The Victorian Institute of Sport Advancement Series offers Victorian Government secondary school students the opportunity to learn from VIS experts in the areas of nutrition and sport science. 

The nutrition and sport science education sessions cover key concepts and how they apply to everyday life and elite sport. Sessions are targeted to the Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 curriculum for health and physical education. 

This program is supported by the Victorian Government, Department of Education and Training, as part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series Student Excellence Program.

Sport Science Advancement 

These interactive sport science education sessions will teach students about each of the different areas of sport science and how they relate to elite athlete performance.

VIS Sport Scientists will take the students through real-life athlete examples and give them exclusive insights into how athletes train, and how their performance in training and competition is closely monitored to ensure they reach their full potential. 

Sessions are targeted to Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 curriculum and competency levels. The aim is to deliver age-appropriate content, specific to the health and physical education framework.

Year 7 & 8  

  • The role of a sport scientist – an overview of how a sport scientist works in an elite sport environment like the VIS.
  • Physiological Energy Systems – Gain an understanding of the energy systems and how they are tested depending on the type of sport.
  • Movement Analysis – Learn about common types of movement and how movement can be analysed in a team sport setting.

Year 9 & 10  

  • VO2max lab testing – visual of how the test is performed, understanding test data and how it’s applied to training programming.
  • Biomechanics Principles – a look into some basic biomechanics principles and how they apply to everyday life and sport. 
  • Qualitative vs Quantitative Feedback – learning about different types of feedback and when to use each type in a sport setting. 
  • Performance Analysis – Learn sports coding using real-life match play examples.

Year 11 & 12  

  • Ergogenic Aids – Learn about heat and altitude training and how VIS athletes use the VIS heat chamber. 
  • Biomechanics Principles – a look into some basic biomechanics principles, forces and movement analysis using real-life activities.
  • Skill Interventions – Conduct a simple skill intervention using basic movement analysis and skill acquisition principles.    
  • Performance Analysis – Learn sports coding using real-life match play examples and explore difference methods of data interpretation. 
  • GPS – A brief look into the use of GPS in team sport.

Nutrition Advancement 

Nutrition can benefit performance in many ways, whether in the classroom or on the sporting field.

These nutrition education sessions will take students through the basics of good nutrition. They will explore what food can do for you and how to make good food choices, extending to more specific sports nutrition principles such as periodising an athlete’s diet to optimise sporting performance.

VIS Sports Dietitians will draw on their extensive experience and use real athlete stories to teach this information, combined with a variety of practical activities to engage the students.

  • Macro-nutrients - what they are, food sources and functions. Complete a self-dietary assessment.
  • What do athletes eat? - take a sneak peak at how a number of VIS athletes fuel their bodies to perform at their best
  • Label reading - learn how to decode what's on food labels and make informed choices
  • Smart swaps - a look at how simple changes can turn an average diet into an excellent diet

Year 9 & 10 

  • Sports nutrition principles - learn how athletes fuel their bodies to optimise performance
  • Eating to exercise - a look into the guidelines for eating before, during & after exercise
  • Hydration - how do we assess hydration status, sweat losses and prescribe what and how much to drink
  • Nutrition for different sports - investigate how nutritional needs vary for different athletes and sports using our VIS athletes as case studies
  • Become the Sports Dietitian - an opportunity to plan an athlete's competition diet.

Year 11 & 12 

  • The role of the sports dietitian - an overview of how a sports dietitian works with elite athletes
  • Planning an athlete's diet - learn how we go about assessing energy expenditure & requirements and how we translate this information into a menu plan
  • Periodised nutrition - learn what this means with real athlete case studies
  • Know your diets - we'll assess the different needs for different sports and various diets out there
  • Become the Sports Dietitian - an opportunity to plan an athlete's diet
  • Supplements - what are they and how do they fit in to an athlete's program

Session Cost

Thanks to the Victorian Government the program is free of charge for all Victorian Government Secondary Schools. Please note: We may request that students and schools provide their own IT Device, Pen and Paper for certain activities. 

Session Details

From Term 1 2022 both face-to-face and virtual sessions are available. Note: The VIS requires all visitors to the VIS facility to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. 

Face-to-face sessions are approximately 90 min in duration plus a facility tour.
