Victorian Institute of Sport

Wednesday, 03 April 2019

On Wednesday 10 April 2019, the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) will open its doors to the general public, showcasing its world-class facilities, athletes and experts.

The inaugural VIS Open Day will give visitors rare access to the inner workings of the VIS’ headquarters at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park. Between 10am and 2pm, the Open Day promises the complete inner-sanctum experience with information sessions from our high performance experts and interactive activities with VIS athletes that will provide a unique taste of what it takes to be an elite performer.

Many of Australia’s best athletes have trained at the VIS including Catherine Freeman, Cadel Evans and Nicole Livingstone, and more recently Mack Horton and Scotty James. This has propelled them on to the world stage and has led to phenomenal success.

The VIS provides a range of services and support to Victoria’s elite athletes including advanced and specialised coaching, sport science and sports medicine services, career and education advice, and training and competition support.

Visitors at the Open Day will rub shoulders with some of Australia’s best current athletes, including Olympic Aerial Skiing Champion Lydia Lassila and dynamic Melbourne Vixens mid-courters Kate Moloney and Liz Watson.

Interactive sessions and demonstrations; hands-on experiences in the Performance Labs with the Sport Scientists, practical cooking sessions with specialist Sports Dietitians, and more will be on offer.

For those wanting to ‘come and try’, the resident Vixens netball team will be running skills and drills clinics and the Aussie Steelers Wheelchair Rugby team will be giving visitors the opportunity to try “Murderball”.

VIS CEO Anne Marie Harrison said the Open Day is a great opportunity for members of the public to get a feel for the life of an elite athlete; “For the first time in our almost 30 year history, we will open the doors to our world-class facilities for members of the public to see how and where the world’s best athletes and experts ply their trade.”

The VIS Open Day is supported by the Victorian Government and part of the VIS’ support for the Premier’s Active April campaign.
