Birkinhead edges out former champion

Tuesday, 03 April 2018

VIS athletes Brooke Stratton (Long Jump) and Damien Birkinhead (Shot Put) proved they're ready for Commonwealth Games action, registering great results at the Queensland International Track Classic in Brisbane.

Birkinhead edged out Glasgow 2014 shot put champion O’Dayne Richards (JAM) with a throw of 20.30m to claim victory.

Continuing to fly under the radar, Birkinhead is certainly one to keep an eye on next week in his quest for Commonwealth Games gold.

Long jumper Stratton is also knocking at the door of Commonwealth Games glory, producing her third best jump ever with a mark of 6.88m.

If Stratton can reproduce her jump next week, she will no doubt be among the medallists.

Athletics begins at Gold Coast 2018 on 8 April.
