Hockeyroos bronze medal success

Monday, 10 April 2017

The Hockeyroos have finished 3rd in the Hawkes Bay Cup over in New Zealand on the weekend.

The Australian team claimed bronze in a close match against Team USA that came down to the wire in a 3-2 shootout. VIS athletes Madi Ratcliffe and Kristina Bates both scored goals for the Australian side to help secure the win.

Australia held a 1-nil lead for most the match after an early goal, with their defensive efforts repeatedly stopping the US from equalising. With less than two minutes to go in the game, a rebound off a missed USA penalty corner saw the scores tied and the match headed for a shoot out.

Hockeyroos Head Coach Paul Gaudoin said the tournament was a great first tournament as a new squad for the team.

“It was a great learning tournament for us overall, we have a new style of play which we’re working on and everyone is working hard to learn that style and apply what we’ve talk about.” Gaudion said.

The Hockeyroos will next head to the World League semi-final, in Brussels in June.
