Rio 2016 bound Kathryn Mitchell has won javelin silver in the opening leg of the Diamond League season in Doha.
Mitchell threw a best mark of 63.25m to finish just under two metres behind South Africa's Sunette Viljoen who threw 65.14 metres.
Heading into her final attempt Mitchell sat in fourth but managed to pull out a strong throw when it mattered to claim her spot on the podium.
Ryan Gregson’s objective for his 1500m race was to nudge the 3:36.20 Olympic qualifying mark which would automatically select himself for Rio after claiming the Australian title in April.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. As the gun fired there was significant push and shove resulting in Gregson falling. Gregson was then left to run a race of his own 30 metres back from the field, a promising and motivating performance of 3:40.69 proves he is not far off obtaining the elusive qualifying time.
The Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Kawasaki took place on Sunday and after a very successful domestic season Brooke Stratton commenced her international campaign in Japan.
Stratton opened her competition with a leap of 6.22m, then Round 2 saw her take the lead with 6.45m. Eventual winner Tianna Bartoletta (USA) reclaimed the lead in round 3 and remained on top for the rest of the competition. Stratton rounded out the competition with second place and a pleasing jump of 6.55m (-1.7).
