Club SportEd - 2008!

In 2007 SportEd worked closely with a number of councils looking at strategies working with clubs within their municipality to expand/ develop programs to assist in club development.

After a successful year we are pleased to announce the following Local Government Agencies have joined our ever growing network: Banyule City Council, The City of Casey and Kingston City Council.

As part of these strategies, the three councils are organising workshops throughout the year for clubs to attend and gain some valuable information to assist them while running their clubs. The workshops are aimed at committees, coaches, parents, players and officials. Clubs can attend these workshops free of charge and accredited coaches can gain updating points by attending.

Please visit the CALENDAR page for the workshops scheduled in 2008. Keep an eye on this page as more workshops will be added throughout the year!

To register you attendance at a workshop, you must email or call the council* hosting the workshop with:

Thanks Official Awards

Sport Education Victoria supports State Sporting Associations to recruit, recognise and retain quality officials.  The Thanks Official Awards have been developed to acknowledge the vital contribution Officials make for their sport.  Sport Education Victoria provides a trophy and night out for two people to the selected recipients of the Thanks Official Awards.  To see if your sport is involved in the Thanks Official Campaign and for more information on how you can nominate an official for this award, please contact your State Sporting Association.

Officiating General Principles Course

If required, Sport Education can provide Officials with the means to complete their Officiating General Principles course.  This course partially fulfills requirements of the National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS).  To qualify for accreditation as an official it is also necessary to complete the sport specific and officiating practice elements.  These are usually conducted by the State Sporting Organisation.

The Officiating General Principles Course is made up of five main modules.  They are:

  • Legal Responsibilities and Risk Management
  • Officiating Better – A Guide to Self-reflection
  • Communication Skills
  • Dealing with Conflict
  • Fitness and Recovery Training for Officials

These courses are run by Sport Education Victoria at the request of a State Sporting Association.  The cost of the course is negotiated according to numbers, location, etc.

Match Management workshops

Sport Education Victoria offers Match Management Workshops for Officials to assist in the development of:

  • Strategies to assist in developing officials
  • Strategies to support officials when the game gets “hot” e.g. Half/quarter time talks
  • Running screens with spectators
  • Understanding of your legal responsibilities
  • Communication strategies

Officials interested in participating in a Match Management Workshop should contact their State Sporting Association to request a workshop for their sport.

Reference Groups

Sport Education Reference Groups have been formed through a number of the Regional Sports Assemblies (RSA's) to better advise and drive the type and number of courses delivered at a local level.  These local groups ensure that the sport education needs of the local sporting community are being met.

Sport Education Victoria assists Regional Sports Assemblies by:

  • Providing access to a range of sport education opportunities for sports clubs/associations, utilising local Sport Education and State Sporting Associated recognised presenters.
  • Providing access to training for local sport personnel where sports have difficulty in conducting viable courses.
  • Developing local presenters for sport delivery and development.
  • Providing professional development for Regional Development Officers and local presenters.
