VIS Paralympians bring home 29 medals

VIS athletes have made a substantial contribution to the Paralympic Games in Athens, contributing 29 medals to Australia’s medal tally of 100. In the closing hours of the Games, track and field athlete, Tim Sullivan won another gold medal in the 400m - his fourth gold medal at Athens and ninth gold medal in total (in Sydney he won five). His other gold medal winning events at Athens were the 100m and 4x100m relay where he broke a world record and the 200m.

In total, VIS Paralympians contributed to eight gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze medals with the bulk of the medals coming from track and field and swimming. This equates to almost 70% of the VIS paralympians who participated in the Games winning medals.

VIS Athlete Services Manager, Paul Kiteley said the standard of competition in Athens was exceptional, especially given the unprecedented number of world and paralympic records that were broken. “The efforts of the Australian team in winning 100 medals was outstanding and every team member should be very proud of their achievements".

In swimming, Sarah Bowen broke her own world record by almost two seconds in the 100m breaststroke to win gold, while Rod Welsh, Daniel Bell and Alex Harris were part of the 4X100m medley relay team who also won gold. In track and field, Richard Colman won gold medal in the 800m wheelchair event and cyclist Peter Homann won the 1km team sprint. Homann also won silver medals in the 3km individual pursuit and the road race.

Other silver medallists include swimmers, Lichelle Clarke in the 400m freestyle, Daniel Bell in the 100m butterfly and 100m breaststroke, Rod Welsh in the 200 individual medley and the 4x100m freestyle relay, along with fellow scholarship holder Alex Harris.

The women’s wheelchair basketball team won a silver medal with VIS scholarship holders Tina McKenzie, Shelley Chaplin, Lisa Chaffey, Melanie Domaschenz, Melinda Young contributing solidly to all the games.

Silver medals were also won by track and field athletes including Kieran Ault-Connell in the javelin, Richard Colman in the 4x100m wheelchair relay and Don Elgin in the 4x400m relay. Elgin also won two bronze medals in the 100m relay and his pet event, the pentathlon.

Swimmers Amanda Drennan and Lichelle Clarke won a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay, Hannah McDougall won bronze in the 4x100m medley relay and Sam Bramham won bronze in the 100m butterfly.

Daniela DiToro and Anthony Bonaccurso both won a bronze medal in their tennis matches for singles and doubles respectively. Rod Welsh won bronze in the S10 100m backstroke event and Jodi Willis Roberts won a bronze medal in the shot put, as did Russell Short.
