VIS farewells Delhi-bound athletes
27 July 2010
Last night, the Victorian Institute of Sport hosted an exclusive on-site event to celebrate and farewell its Commonwealth Games selected athletes.
With the Commonwealth Games not until October, the event was scheduled around the athletes’ availability – with most heading overseas in August to begin their preparations.
Swimming star, Leisel Jones, Shotput strongman Scott Martin, race-walking champion Jessica Rothwell and sprinter Sean Wroe were just some of the selected athletes in attendance. Perry Crosswhite, CEO of the Commonwealth Games Association and Commonwealth Games Chef de Mission, Steve Moneghetti were also present.
Former VIS swimmer - turned VIS employee, Daniel Kowalski kept guests entertained as MC, whilst CEO of Netball Australia, Kate Palmer introduced the athletes in her first official duty as the new Chairman of the VIS.
This Indian-themed event also served as an informal information session for athletes, as VIS nutritionist Kylie Andrew dispensed valuable advice on communal eating and ways to avoid the dreaded ‘Delhi-Belly’.
Students from St. Michael's Primary School in Ashburton, presented athletes with ‘patriotic packs’ filled with all-things-Australian - all kindly donated by VIS supporters.
