Four named in Tri-Nations series

Monday, 07 May 2018

Four Victorian Institute of Sport female hockey players have been selected to represent Australia at the Tri Nations series in New Zealand this month.

Kristina Bates, Ashlee Wells and Lily Brazel come into the team, having not been selected for the Commonwealth Games, whilst Emily Hurtz will look to continue her form, fresh from her Silver medal at Gold Coast.

After not winning the gold medal they were after at Gold Coast, Hockeyroos coach Paul Gaudoin admits that whilst disappointing, the team have an opportunity for redemption against the Black Sticks.

“We weren’t able to get the result we wanted at the Commonwealth Games in the end and we want to give some players an opportunity to show what they can do.” Gaudoin said.

“We think we can get some better knowledge and information for when we select the final group for the World Cup.”

The Hockeyroos have a young list and Gaudoin says that he wants the side to be “unpredictable” at the World Cup.

“We also want to use this tournament as an opportunity to individually develop some players.” Gaudoin said.

“Also we want to make sure we’re working on creating and scoring more goals.

“Our defence was solid at the Commonwealth Games but we need to find ways to create more chances and finish those chances.”

The Hockeyroos will play four round-robin fixtures at the Tri Nations plus finals from May 19-27.
