The Kookaburras have claimed a confident win in the opening match of the International Festival of Hockey in Bendigo, defeating New Zealand 4-0 on Sunday.
VIS scholarship holders Aaron Kleinschmidt, Kiran Arunasalam, and Josh Pollard all played a key role in the crushing victory.
Pollard opened the scoring for the Kookaburras, claiming Australia’s first goal within the first eight minutes. While Arunasalam all but sealed the deal for the Aussies in the third quarter with a quick third goal for the home side.
The Kookaburras will face the Black Sticks again later today, before taking on Japan, Pakistan and New Zealand again, later in the week.
Meanwhile, the Hockeyroos will kick off their International Festival of Hockey campaign today taking on the USA at 4pm in Bendigo.
The fine form shown by the Kookaburras in Bendigo continues Australia’s winning streak in the hockey world. Last week, the Australian U21 side defeated Great Britain, 2-0, to take out the Sultan of Johor Cup.
VIS scholarship holder, Nathan Ephraums, was named MVP of the final. Ephraums was the equal tournament high goal scorer, scoring nine goals over the tournament, including one goal in the final.
