Watson shines in Diamonds win

Monday, 16 October 2017

The Australian Diamonds have secured their Constellation Cup win, making a clean sweep of the four match series against the New Zealand Silver Ferns.

Melbourne Vixens stars Liz Watson, Jo Weston and Kate Moloney all took to the court throughout the match in which Australia defeated New Zealand, 58-42.

This is the first time since 2014 that the Diamonds have not lost a game during the four-match test series.

Liz Watson was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance on the court. Throughout the match, Watson faced a tough and physical match up with Silver Ferns mid-courter Kayla Cullen.

“I knew it was going to be physical and I kind of liked the physicality of the game, it’s something that I thrive on,” said Watson.

“You know when they are starting to get physical that they could be getting frustrated. You have to take it as a positive, but keep brushing it off and keep going.”

Earlier in the series, Melbourne Vixens Captain Kate Moloney, made her debut for the Australian Diamonds becoming the 174th player to represent Australia on the international stage.

The Australian Diamonds now turn their focus towards upcoming Commonwealth Games selection and the Fast5 World Series. Melbourne Vixens stars Kate Moloney and Tegan Philip will take to the court over the series, with Vixen Chloe Watson named as a reserve. The series will take place on the 28-29th October at Hisense Arena in Melbourne. Tickets are available now at
