Watson shines as Diamonds find form

Monday, 09 October 2017

The Australian Diamonds have bounced back from their Quad Series loss to the New Zealand Silver Ferns, winning the first two matches of the Constellation Cup series against their Trans-Tasman rivals.

The Diamonds won the first test 57-54 last Thursday, before backing up their performance on Sunday, taking the win 60-52.

Melbourne Vixen star and Sharelle McMahon medallist, Liz Watson, played a key role in the team’s attacking side, feeding well to Wood and Bassett in her roles as wing attack and centre. Watson was awarded MVP of the match for her outstanding performance in attack.

Diamonds shooter, Caitlin Bassett, said she was pleased with how the team worked particularly in the attacking third.

“I think the girls were a lot better with their placement of the ball tonight,” Bassett said.

“We were hitting the circle edge and Lizzie Watson in particular was so strong and has got such fast hands that it’s really hard to stop her.” she said.

Earlier in the day, Melbourne Vixens skipper, Kate Moloney, was presented with her Diamonds dress. She joins fellow Vixen’s teammates Liz Watson, Jo Weston and Emily Mannix in the Constellation Cup team.

The Australian Diamonds now turn their attention to the third match of the series, set to take place in Adelaide, on Wednesday 11 October at 7:30pm.
