Saturday, 09 September 2017
VIS scholarship holder, Penny Smith, made shooting world history last week, when she secured the inaugural Trap Mixed Team World Championship title alongside teammate Tom Grice, at the ISSF World Championships.
In a shooting masterclass, Smith and Grice clawed their way back from a 6-point deficit to Russian duo Antonio Ballion and Beatriz Martinez to claim victory by a single point, 33-32.
Post-event, the Australian pair said they were thrilled with the win, scoring the history making result.
“We went into the final really focussed, and after what felt like a roller coaster ride we’ve come out as the first ever Trap Mixed Team World Champions.”
Fellow VIS scholarship holder, Catherine Skinner, was also competing in the World Championships first event with teammate Jack Wallace, but was unfortunately knocked out by bronze medallists Ashley Carroll and Derek Haldeman (USA).
VIS scholarship holder, Aislin Jones, finished 4th overall in the Junior Women’s Skeet event, with 29 points. American, Katharina Monika Jacob, took out the title with a score of 48.
