Hamilton races to first World title

Monday, 07 August 2017

VIS scholarship holder, Fergus Hamilton, has won his first Junior World Championship title with crew partner Cormac Kennedy-Leverett winning the Junior Men’s Double Sculls event in Trakai, Lithuania over the weekend.

The pair, the youngest in the final, took the title in a convincing win crossing the 500m mark in front, before putting their foot down to steam ahead of competitors Belarus and Germany.

After the race, Hamilton said that it was a fantastic first experience.

“I loved that race, we really went for it. We managed to get out front and just hold it. We’ve actually only had four consistent weeks together rowing,” he said.

Fellow VIS scholarship holder, Skye Froebel, alongside Taylor McCarthy-Smith won their C-Final on Saturday, capping off their Junior World Championships ranked 13th in the world.

Meanwhile, the Australian Junior Women’s Eight consisting of VIS scholarship holders - Jessica Thompson, Georgia Thomson, Mimi Tuddenham, Emmie Frederico, Brigid McKeagney-Douglas, Ruby Gioulekas, Sophie Balson, Jane Perrignon and coxswain Phoebe Georgakas - snagged bronze in the B-Final to finish the Junior World Championships ranked 9th in the world.
