Webster to lead Stingers to battle

Sunday, 02 July 2017

The FINA World Champs Aussie Stingers squad has been named, with VIS scholarship holder Rowie Webster set to captain the side on the world stage.

Fellow VIS scholarship holder Madeleine Steere was also named in the Aussie Stingers squad.

Webster told Water Polo Australia that she is looking forward to the competition and the atmosphere of competing in Budapest.

“Budapest is going to be huge! The atmosphere on Margaret Island (aka ‘Water Polo Island’) is going to be phenomenal. I’m sure we can expect a lot of chanting and drums...it will be really exciting. It’s basically the home of Water Polo,” Webster said.

“In  this Tournament we will look to build on each game. We haven’t actually played a game this international season where we have all been together, so it will be really exciting,” she said.

The tournament marks another phase in the 2017 rebuild towards the next Olympic cycle. Led by Stingers Head Coach, Sakis Kechagis, who said the competition will provide international experience for some of the younger players as the team works towards Tokyo 2020.

The FINA World Cup will take place in Budapest, starting July 16. Australia have drawn Kazakhstan, Russia and Greece in their pool.

The final team for the Aussie Stingers is set to be named next week.
