Hamilton strikes again

Monday, 19 June 2017

Lucas Hamilton has secured yet another impressive podium finish, taking home the silver medal at the U23 Giro d’Italia.

Capping off what had already been a successful event for the VIS cyclist, Hamilton finished second in the General Classification, only 9 seconds behind Russian Pavel Sikatov.

His podium finish was bolstered by a stage win on day 5 of the race as well as a 1-2 finish with fellow U23 Australian rider and Michelton Scott teammate, Jai Hindley, on the final stage of the race.

Riding for Michelton Scott, Hamilton continues to deliver a very successful 2017 European season following a successive number of podium finishes over previous months.

VIS scholarship holder, Tom Jones, was given the honour of pulling on the green and gold jersey, after winning the U19 Individual Time Trial at the U19 Road Nationals in Geelong over the weekend.

In a tight race, Jones only just took the victory by 9 seconds, ahead of fellow Victorian Elliot Schultz in a time of 29:44.9. Fellow VIS athlete Riley Hart wasn’t too far behind Jones, finishing 5th in the race.

Jensen Plowright also made his name known, finishing on the podium in two of the three events. The VIS scholarship holder finished third in the road race, after a solo break from eventual race winner Mitchell Wright saw him take victory nearly one minute ahead of Plowright.

VIS cyclist, Riley Hart, finished in 5th for the second time on the weekend, despite leading a six rider break for much of the road race.

Plowright added a silver medal to his bronze on the final day of racing, finishing second in the Criterium. In a bunch sprint finish where practically nothing separated him from race winner Bryce Lanigan and six other cyclists, Plowright claimed silver to finish his U19 Nationals weekend on the podium.
