Former Award of Excellence recipient nudges out Slattery

Monday, 18 December 2017

It was a highly successful weekend of track cycling for Victorian Institute of Sport riders at DISC Velodrome, with past Award of Excellence recipient, Leigh Howard placing second in the 200 lap Madison and youngster Godfrey Slattery finishing third. U19 hopefuls, Jensen Plowright and Luke Plapp placed fifth.

In the women’s event, Alice Culling and her QAS partner were eying off the bronze medal position, but the NSWIS riders pulled through, leaving Culling having to settle for fourth place. Fellow VIS rider, Ruby Roseman Gannon, rounded out the top five with a strong finish.

In the Men’s Austral 2000m handicap, VIS cyclist Braeden Dean claimed third place after a re-run of the event occurred due to 18 of the 24 riders crashing.

Jensen Plowright was again prominent over the weekend, winning silver at the Australian Omnium Championships in the JM19 category.
