Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney have produced a stunning come from behind result to claim an Olympic bronze medal in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard event.
The diving duo arrived in Rio as medal contenders, however, their hopes appeared dashed as at one point dropped to last in the eight team final.
The pair was in fifth place heading into the last round before their fifth and final dive, a two and a half, somersault twist pike, delivered a score of 71.10.
They faced a nervous wait, as Canada had the opportunity to push them off the podium with their final attempt. However Smith and Keeney pipped them by less than one point. “We thought we weren’t really in with a chance after our fourth dive. But we just had fun on our last dive and it was a really interesting competition because we seemed pretty relaxed,” Smith told Channel Seven. “We just tried to give it our all and it obviously just shows that it’s not over until the last dive.”
Chinese duo Tingmao Shi and Minxia Wu won gold, as Italians Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape' finished with silver.
