Tweddell sails to silver

Monday, 02 May 2016

VIS scholarship holder Oliver Tweddell sailed a strong race to finish second overall in the Finn class at the Sailing World Cup in Hyeres, France.

After tough conditions earlier in the day, Australia’s Finn sailors including Queenslander Jake Lilley benefitted from lighter conditions in the eighth and final race of the series. It was however, the Queenslander who got the better of his countryman, finishing just two points in front of Tweddell in the 33 man field.

The race for Australian Olympic selection tightens as the pair battle over the one spot available in the Finn class.

“Conditions in the medal race were tricky.  I was really happy getting third. I knew what I had to do going into the race and I was glad I managed to come away with the Silver Medal,” said Tweddell post-race.

“It’s great for Australian Finn sailing to have both Jake and I up the front ….”

Tweddell will head to Gaeta, Italy next to compete in the Finn Gold Cup from 5 May.
