2016 Victorian Open Swimming Champs
Monday, 25 January 2016
VIS Swimmers took home 18 medals from the 2016 Victorian Open Swimming Championships.
Marking the start of their major lead into April’s Olympic and Paralympic trials, VIS swimmers took the MSAC competition pool over the weekend winning 4 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze medals.
Highlights of the meet were the 3 silver medals won by Josh Beaver in the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke, only to be touched out in these events by the reigning World Champion in the 100 and 200m, Mitch Larkin (QLD).
Support staff were greatly impressed by 22 year old Beaver who has his sights firmly focused on joining Larkin on the plane to Rio.
After sitting out the 200m Individual Medley due to a migraine, Travis Mahoney dominated the 400 Individual Medley leading from the start.
As a result of these great swims, both Beaver and Mahoney have been added to the Australian Dolphins Team to compete in Perth at the BHP Billiton Super Series meet in 2 weeks’ time.
For Mahoney in particular selection in the small Super Series squad is a great reward for his persistence and hard work.
His weekend time was the quickest he has ever swum over the 400 metres so early in the year.Tags
