FURTHER PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will be the biggest event our State has ever hosted, and is set to focus public attention on elite sport like never before .
As part of efforts to make the most of this event, the Victorian Government is encouraging talented young Victorians to pursue their sporting dreams and hopefully one day compete at an international level.
Through the Future Athletes Program, the Victorian Institute of Sport and sixteen State Sporting Associations will help link talented secondary school students with an established athlete development pathway.
Selected students have the opportunity to attend special sports clinics, designed to challenge and inspire them to develop their sporting potential.
Specifically, the clinics are designed to: • link talented student-athletes with developmental pathways; • provide valuable technical advice from Victoria’s top coaches on improving sporting performance; • give advice on good nutrition, injury prevention, and ethics in sport; and • promote a balanced approach to personal development as well as sporting achievement.
Acknowledging that many students are already linked to sports performance networks though clubs, this project aims to attract those who have not yet made a substantial commitment to a particular sport and would like to explore their potential.
Selection criteria for clinics will be specific to each sport. More details and application forms can be found on each sporting association’s web site.
The Future Athletes Program is focused on introducing students who participate in school sport to existing high performance pathways. It provides an opportunity for students who have not yet made a significant contribution in the sport through clubs and representative teams, to explore their potential in the sport and discover what it might take to achieve at the next level of their sporting development.
The Future Athletes Program Clinic format also endeavours to link student athletes with the technical expertise from leading coaches within the sport, with two practical training sessions conducted throughout the day. Successful applicants are taken through a one hour workshop on Sports Nutrition, Training and Injury Prevention. Students also spend some 'time out' with a guest athlete who will provide valuable advice on what it takes to be your best in sport. Clinic participants are provided with lunch and a Future Athletes Program pack all free of charge.
The Future Athletes Program is proudly supported by the Victorian Government, State Sporting Associations and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
