VIS athletes won 59 medals at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. The tally includes 24 gold, 22 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Of the 67 athletes at the Games, 48 won medals in 11 different sports. Most medals were won in the sports of athletics (11 medals), shooting (13 medals), and swimming (16 medals) while medals were also won in team sports such as men's and women's hockey, and netball.

The greatest individual contribution came from shooter, Lalita Yauhleuskaya, who won three gold medals and one silver medal. Other athletes to make significant individual contributions include diver, Loudy Tourky, and track and field athlete, Jana Pittman, who won two gold medals each, and swimmers, Michael Klim (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and Matt Welsh (1 gold, 2 silver).

Artistic gymnast, Ashleigh Brennan, who, at 15 years of age, was the youngest VIS athlete on the Australian team, had a successful start to her international career, winning one gold and one silver medal.

VIS Executive Director, Dr Frank Pyke, said the VIS was very pleased with the performance of our athletes.

"Congratulations to them all and thank you to their coaches and support teams, our sponsors and the State and Federal governments for their assistance".
