Netball

Athletes

The primary aim of the VIS netball program is to prepare athletes for competition at elite level, both the ANZ Championship and the Australian National League, and to prepare athletes for selection in state and national teams. The program focuses on the holistic development of each athlete to ensure balance and achievement in both sport and life.

Overview

The VIS awards scholarships to the top twelve Vixens athletes and a further twelve scholarships to athletes in the second-tier squad, the Fury.  The Fury competes in the ANL which runs through August and September and comprises a team from each State and Territory, plus an AIS team.

The Vixens training program is based on preparing for and competing in the ANZ Championship, which consists of 13 home and away rounds plus a 3 week finals series.  This year the ANZ Championship competition again started early, running from March to June, to accommodate the preparation of the Australian program leading into the World Championships in July.  Due to the early season start the Vixens commenced their training program in October, with the athletes involved in individual training and conditioning programs to develop areas identified during the extensive screening process.

The demands of the competition require the athletes to be able to perform maximal short, high intensity repeat efforts while maintaining their skill and concentration.  Strategies for recovery and regeneration are also important to enable the athletes to back up efforts within sessions and across the many training sessions each week.

The weekly training regime consists of skill training, fitness and strength training, sport science, strategic preparation, match analysis, sports medicine and ACE activities, with the athletes utilising the specialist facilities of the VIS gym for physical preparation, and various outdoor venues for skill based training.

Team sessions began in January, with the focus on specific conditioning, building to on court and match play sessions in February, in readiness for the season.  The added demands of international travel are factored into the program throughout the season.

In 2010-11 the VIS netball program had six athletes selected in the Australian squad, with Julie Corletto selected in the Australian Diamonds team which won the coveted World Championship title in Singapore.
