VIS stars shine in Tassie

The Mersey Valley Tour kicked off the Australian National Road Series for both men and women over the weekend, with the event also serving as a World Championship Team selection event for the U19 Juniors.

The three stage, two day event saw riders tackle some of the toughest terrain Tasmania has to offer.  124 riders competed over three gruelling stages; a 24km time trial, a 93.7km stage ending in a mountain top finish and a final day road race. Four VIS athletes competed in the event and performed well, with Alex Morgan (U19 men) and Lisa Jacobs (elite women) winning the overall two day event

Alex Morgan won the U19 men’s individual time trial and this win, alongside his Oceania Championship win last month, gives him the opportunity to ride at the Cycling World Championships in Holland in September.  In the hilltop finish road race (U19 men) VIS scholarship holder Jack Cummings was third across the line with fellow VIS athlete Tom Hamilton in sixth place.  The final road stage saw Alex Morgan dominating throughout to finally finish second across the line, with Jack Cummings in fourth place and Tom Hamilton fifth.

Lisa Jacobs dominated the elite women’s event, having a stage win and two second placings to secure overall victory for the weekend.
