Stevenson joins qualifiers list

VIS shot putter Dale Stevenson is set to make his Olympic Games debut after hurling a selection qualifier at a meeting in South Carolina over the weekend.

The VIS scholarship holder, who has been training in the USA, threw a personal best 20.63 metres with his last of six throws at the Clemson Invitational to stake his claim for nomination to the Australian Olympic Committee for London 2012.

An ecstatic Stevenson revealed he had sensed something special after a strong training block. He said; ‘Even though it was a relatively small competition, I was the most nervous and excited to throw that I have been for a while - I knew that it could be the day for me to break through.’ Stevenson added; ‘I have an awesome support team who I would like to thank. They know who they are and what they mean to me.’

Stevenson joins fellow VIS throws athlete Scott Martin (discus) on the Olympic qualifiers list.  Their inclusion in Australia's squad for London, is now very likely.
